Smart & submetering is a key enabler of the energy transition: empowering consumers, supporting renewable integration and enabling new market services such as dynamic tariffs and deployment of household flexibility.
Nodis supported the rollout of the Smart Meter Roadmap for a major Belgian distribution system operator, laying the digital foundation for large-scale smart meter deployment.

Objectives:

The implementation of smart & sub metering is a significant digital transformation that touches many aspects of a distribution operator’s capabilities — ranging from logistics and customer relationship management to metering, billing, technical operations and integration in the existing market functioning.

The program introduced a new digital operating model impacting customer processes, operations and market interactions:

• Deployment of NB-IoT smart meters at scale
• Adoption of a Data-as-a-Service model for meter communication and data collection
• Implementation of a Meter Data Management (MDM) platform handling acquisition, validation, remote operations and data provisioning
• Integration with the Central Market System to enable market processes (switching, dynamic pricing, insights)
• Coordination of business and technical streams including logistics, specifications and service management

Project solution

As part of this large-scale transformation, Nodis Consulting played a key role—particularly in the implementation and integration of the Meter Data Management system, a critical component for ensuring the reliable flow, storage, and use of smart meter data.

Our contribution

Nodis played a central role in the implementation and integration of the MDM ecosystem:

• Business analysis of new processes, information flows and market redesign
• Leading software selection and procurement
• Functional analysis and system integration design for the MDM platform
• End-to-end test coordination and quality assurance
• Project coordination and stakeholder alignment across market parties, vendors and internal teams

This ensured reliable meter data flows and enabled our customers to safely deploy smart meter services at scale and prepare for the submetering implementation in Belgium.
